Reading the Dashboard: Proxies for Your Mitochondrial State
While the NADâș/NADH ratio is the master switch of your cellular engine, there is one major practical problem: you can't walk into a standard clinic and get a direct measurement of it. It is a dynamic state deep within your cells, not a static number easily captured in your blood.
Fortunately, we don't have to fly blind. We can read the state of this master switch indirectly by looking at several other key redox pairs in the blood. These are pairs of molecules, one oxidized and one reduced, whose ratio in circulation directly reflects the underlying NADâș/NADH balance in different cellular compartments.
These ratios are the most important gauges on your mitochondrial dashboard. They provide a real-time window into your cellular energy status, moving us beyond "normal" vs. "abnormal" and towards an understanding of "optimal" vs. "dysfunctional." For most of these pairs, a higher ratio of the oxidized molecule to its reduced counterpart signifies a healthier, more efficient state. However, as we will see, there is one critical exception to this rule.
The ability to test for and interpret these redox pairs is on the cutting edge of functional medicine. By learning to read them, you can gain a far more accurate picture of your metabolic health than standard lab tests could ever provide. The four key pairs we will examine are:
